My dad immigrated here (from India via England via Canada) as a trained aeronautical engineer in the late fifties when the cold war and techno race prompted companies to do exactly as Ezra Klein suggests, bring in highly skilled workers from wherever they were available— and at that time the government allowed it (although there were certainly other policy and principle problems back then). You are so right—he contributed far more than he ever took, and if that policy hadn’t existed at the time, neither would I. We need to look at the bigger picture. Xenophobia is not only morally wrong, it’s counterproductive.
